A lot of coaches are FRUSTRATED.
I’ve been interviewing coaches and I’ve heard it over and over. Here’s how the story goes:
“I was unfulfilled in my job (or life). After a bunch of searching (or stumbling into it), I found coaching and it really resonated for me. So I got some training and put up a shingle.”
But then it’s like the car broke down just as you were about to take it out for a spin … where are the clients?
If this is you, I really feel for you. It is a hard place to be.
What can you do?
If your car breaks down, the choices are obvious. You could try to drive it anyway, fix it yourself, get a friend to help you, or hire a mechanic.
For your business, overwhelm and fear of failure make it harder to see, but the choices are really the same. But the car that needs to be fixed is your marketing. People can’t become clients unless they know who you are and have good feelings about you first … and taking people through that journey is exactly what marketing is for.
So let’s look at the choices more closely.
Try to drive it anyway
You’re already doing this one and it isn’t working. Without clients, you don’t have the income you need. If it goes on too long you may have to quit coaching.
Fix it yourself
In order to fix it, you have to start marketing. But how? The internet has lots of information about marketing, but it’s a complicated subject. The learning curve is steep and you have to study a lot even to figure out where to get started. Once you have a marketing strategy in mind, you have to learn how to use the various bits of technology. Unless you love marketing and the technology behind it, this is likely to be a lot of effort and frustration.
Get a friend to help you (marketing coach)
If you have a friend who understands marketing and the technology behind it, great! Otherwise, we’re talking about a marketing coach. Here is some of what they can guide you in:
- Identifying and understanding your Ideal Client
- Developing your Brand and Unique Selling Proposition
- Creating a set of compelling offerings
- Choosing your marketing strategies
- Developing a content strategy
- Creating content in the easiest way possible
- Posting and promoting content in the right places and in the easiest way possible
- Measuring, testing, and optimizing your marketing
With a coach, you’ll know what to do more quickly and easily. You’ll have someone to help figure out what’s working and what’s not and how to fix it.
This option is a lot less frustrating, but you’re responsible for doing the work and for paying the coach.
Hire a mechanic (marketing service)
If you have the money for it, one of the easiest and least frustrating things to do is to hire a marketing service. They can do a lot of the work for you. You’ll still have a bunch of information to provide. For example, they can do a lot of the market research, but only you can say who you would love to serve.
If you’re in this situation, I hope you have someone to talk to about it. I know that I’d want to hear how you feel about the whole situation and about the options. I imagine sitting across from you, brainstorming ideas together and coming up with a combination of things that really suits you and your situation.
In case you haven’t noticed, we’re a friend who’s also a mechanic and we’d be happy to help you out.
